Data Governance Consulting

Why data governance?  Why now?

Higher education institutions increase their enterprise data exponentially every year, but stakeholders still don't have access to trusted and timely analysis for decision-making.

What happens?  Schools and administrative centers hire data analysts who use their own logic, techniques and tools to build analyses without guidance from data catalogs and identified data stewards who can:

- Identify existing reports that could be leveraged in lieu of building a duplicate
- Provide context for data fields and views used in their queries
- Prevent their units from making false assumptions (and taking action) on their reports
- Address data quality issues at the source, rather than burdening users with the time it takes to find workarounds

I've seen this firsthand as an analytics director at Harvard and UC Berkeley and as a Chief Data Officer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where my team, partnering with our Data Governance Council delivered an institutional data policy, procedures, and standards

How I can help:

- Introduce stakeholders to data governance with a fun, engaging presentation, or coach you through your own
- Use the DAMA International Framework to assess your current state and help you answer the question, how bad is it?
- Interview stakeholders and summarize areas of concern and opportunities for collaborative improvement
- Build an actionable project roadmap and plan for implementation of high impact, lower-budget initiatives to get you started on up to major data initiative that will take you to the next level
